I was reminded of this while reading a social media post about a person who had been ridiculed in what sounded like a group networking event for not know certain numbers in their business.
So many thoughts have been running through my head;
- Why would you ridicule someone in public like this? Answer an out and out bully…
- Why as adults do we accept being bullied? A huge, huge topic…
- Aren’t these networking groups in part there to support and mentor their members? Yes…
I could go on all day…
The thing is there is and there will always be ‘stuff’ we don’t know we don’t know.
There was a time when each and every one of us didn’t know ‘stuff’. We didn’t know how to walk, talk, sit up, eat with knife and fork, read, write, say please and thank you, again I could go on all day but you get the gist.
Over the last 12 years it has been my honour and pleasure to work with 100’s of business owners in dozens of sectors enabling them to understand the things they didn’t know about business.
Without exception all have been experts in their chosen field from hairdressing to engineering, from accountants to solicitors. All have invested heavily in both time and money in perfecting their skills to ensure they offer the right product or service to their clients.
Interestingly anyone can start a business, you don’t have to have a MBA, a degree or any real business knowledge, but if you don’t invest in learning how to run a successful, profitable business that is not so reliant on you, you are could well either go out of business or burn yourself out, you may so never reach your true potential.
There is a simple solution ask questions, ask questions of your accountant, your bank manager, your peers, your business coach, if any of these people ridicule you sack them.
Find a professional who has your best interest at heart who remembers that they too didn’t always know what they now know, who listens, really listens and explains things as often as you need them to in a way that you can understand so you can implement that knowledge in your business.
As a baby trying to stand up no one ever said, ‘you know what you’re not getting the hang of this best you give up and spend your life sitting on the floor’.
So invest in yourself, learn the things you know you need to learn and then ask what else? What else do I need to know to make myself a better……
