I was at a networking meeting this week and sat next to a lovely lady I’ll call her Maureen.
Maureen was excitedly telling me she was moving away from her ‘job’ and starting her own business, she had, had enough of being under appreciated etc, etc. I’m sure we’ve all experienced that, I know I have.
So, Maureen is a clever lady she certainly knows her craft inside out and could walk into any number of roles, employers would be biting her hand off but her own business was what she was passionate about doing.
There was some great education at the event on marketing which focused in on what it was you were selling and who you’re target market was. Over the years Kevin and I have harped on about this endlessly which you will know if you’ve ever been to one of our events.
Enter Maureen’s first hurdle ‘What was she selling?’ The list was pretty long. ‘Who were her target market?’ this list was even longer, she had no idea…
Maureen is not on her own, I speak to business owners day in and day out who thought it would be easier, thought it would have given them more time and money, thought they would have people flocking to buy their products and services, thought they knew how to price their wares competitively, thought all the people who said they would buy from them or work for them really would.
There is so much we don’t know we don’t know when we start out in business which is why so many go back to being employed.
It doesn’t have to be that way…
Invest some time and energy in learning, if you truly want to earn more it’s essential to learn more.
Learn from someone who’s been in your shoes, who’s made the mistakes, who knows the pitfalls and can help you avoid them.
Discover that which only you can do in your business and outsource that which you do not have the time and/or skill to do for yourself.
Not every client/customer is a good one, learn how to define this early on it will save you a fortune over the years.
Your business is only as strong as your weakest link, so hire slow and fire fast.
I could go on but I’m sure you get the gist…
Since leaving the world of hospitality 12 years ago Kevin and I have dedicated our time to enabling business owners to ‘take control’ in if fact we have a whole series of workshops covering just about every topic a you need. So if you are ready and want to really want to ‘take control’ of your business get in touch we’re here to help you both learn and earn more…
