Some time ago we wrote an EBook ’10 Steps to Taking Control of Your Business’…
The purpose of the book was to help business owners just like you to ‘Take Control’ of the many functions within their business…
To ‘Take Control’ of their thinking which is the real game changer…
Growing a business can be hard work and along the way, you will meet many challenges…
Some minor, some major…
If you would like a pdf of the whole book drop me an email [email protected] and I’ll send it over to you 😊
Step #7… Build A GREAT Team
You can’t grow a great business without building a great team.
Notice we didn’t say just any old team!
Sure, you can grow a business to a certain point on your own, but you wouldn’t be reading this if you didn’t want to go beyond that.
To create that leveraged, consistent, scaled business you’re going to need to recruit some people to do some of the work for you!
One of the biggest recruitment mistakes we see is for busy owners to rush out and place an ad on a job site, ‘experienced widget-maker wanted!’ this is reactive recruitment which rarely works and has a really poor effect on your bottom line.
Some things to attend to first.
How’s your culture?
What sort of reputation do you have with prospective employees rather than your usual focus which is your customers?
You see, you have to create a business that literally attracts the kind of team members you want.
Just like marketing for customers you need to approach your team building like a marketing and sales operation.
Once you have a great culture and reputation you can then cast the net to attract the right type of people.
Forget about experience and qualifications (well, not totally), what you want to be looking for is a great attitude.
There’s a saying that goes along the lines that you can train a person
1️⃣ Run a great advertisement in a place your ideal candidate is likely to be looking, in a style that would appeal to them and grab their attention.
2️⃣ Screen candidates based on mandatory levels of experience, qualification, and skill.
3️⃣ Interview the final shortlist at the same time. Yes, we’re talking about group interviews. It saves you time and increases the chances of selecting the best applicant.
4️⃣ Make the offer.
5️⃣ Induct your new team member into your culture and systems.
6️⃣ Review, review, review.
7️⃣ Hirer slow, firer fast. Rinse and repeat! P.S. Here’s an interesting idea; when someone leaves your company the normal practice is to throw them a party!
How about flipping that and have the party when someone joins your company?
If you would like a really cool resource for helping you put together position descriptions email [email protected] and I’ll get it over to you…
